2007 marks the 40th anniversary of Australia's most successful referendum which was a significant event in our nation's history. On 27 May 1967 the referendum saw an overwhelming 90% of eligible Australians vote YES to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the national census of the population and to give the Commonwealth Government power to make specific laws in respect of Indigenous people.
So much has been learned in the last 40 years about the foundation for building meaningful relationships and about the role each Australian plays in working together for the benefit of the nation socially and economically. This special anniversary provides a defining opportunity to further encourage the Australian community's interest in reconciliation and building a stronger vision of respect.
