Reconciliation Walk

Marking the opening of the 2007 Kullarri NAIDOC Festival celebrations in the Kullarri region, community and organisation members peacefully parade through the streets of Broome behind the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands flags with some groups proudly displaying the traditional dress of the people. This walk brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and celebrates and supports the process of reconciliation.

The Reconciliation Walk is followed by this important ceremony where the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are raised as a sign of cultural peace and harmony. Including traditional and contemporary aspects of Indigenous peoples this ceremony highlights the meaning behind NAIDOC and is a time to exhibit the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous people in Australia and their positive contribution to the nation’s identity. The ceremony is followed by a relaxed morning tea on the Shire lawns.

There will also be a bus service after the ceremony provided by Kujurta Buru Pty Ltd which will take people back into town to their cars.

The Kullarri NAIDOC Awards Ceremony celebrates the regions Indigenous achievers and acknowledges their contribution to the community. It is a time for us to recognize those people who give us so much and work tirelessly to make such valuable contributions to our community. Aboriginal Sunday (NAIDOC Mass)

Every year Aboriginal Sunday is celebrated in the Broome Cathedral which is followed by morning tea. This is an opportunity for the Broome parish to get to know one another better whilst welcoming the new members and visitors attending mass. Prayer cards are provided.

Minyirr Park Barrgana Cultural Walk

Minyirr Park cultural walk explains the song cycle system, the Yawuru Six Seasons and the Barrgana Season.  The guide commences from Kennedy Hill and will go to pick up point at Town Beach at 9:00am, then onto the Port, Riddell Beach and Gantheaume Point; these locations are s by the Minyirr Park support vehicle, which will have refreshments and first aid care available for all.  Those requiring a lift can go to any of the above locations. 
Walk will finish up at the Minyirr Park Base Camp.  Drop-Offs and Lunch will be provided.

The Barrgana Beach Day is a collaborative youth focused event involving agencies from the youth sector in Broome. Participants aged 8-16 years will engage in traditional cultural and sporting activities on the beach and then gather for a feed, stories and music around the fire at Minyirr Park Base Camp.

Manbana Aboriginal Aqua Cultural Tours is hosting a cultural sharing day where visitors will enjoy an interactive tour of the Discovery Centre with cultural guides and guests followed by morning tea and the ‘planting’ of reconciliation hands in the bush tucker garden.

This is a day of traditional experience where all visitors, from different and diverse backgrounds get to indulge in a range of delicacies. All the food that will be shared on the day have been traditionally caught and prepared. This event will allow our youth to bridge the gap between our elders in liaising on traditional ways of cooking and hunting.

The Opening the Common Gate exhibition presents Broome through the personal stories of ten local storytellers, who recount how they lived through the times when there were prohibited areas and citizenship was denied to people classed as ‘natives-in-law’. The exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum.
