Community Festivals for Education Engagement

Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations

In 2008 the Department for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is providing funding under the Community Festivals for Education Engagement program to enable the Kullarri NAIDOC Festival to deliver a program giving young people opportunities to engage in exciting training activities in Event Project Management.

The project aims to communicate positive engagement with education and to expose young people to healthy lifestyle messages in a manner that resonates with contemporary youth culture.

As part of this project Dampier Peninsula Primary Schools have taken part in media training developing scripts to produce their own short films titled "Doggie Days". Schools then took their scripts to production with full training delivery from Goolarri's registered media trainers before having the opportunity to hold a film night as part of Kullarri NAIDOC celebrations broadcasting their own and other schools short films. "Doggie Days" will also be broadcast throughout Broome on Goolarri Television GTV35 during and after the Kullarri NAIDOC Festival.

Broome youth and students will be involved in the Kullarri NAIDOC Festival in a number of ways including involvement in the youth focused NAIDOC activities with specific events such as the Indigenous Hip Hop Workshops, Traditional Food Tasting Day and the Barrgana Beach Day as well as playing prominent roles in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Local students will be joined by three Indigenous students from Victoria's Gambina Indigenous Youth Leadership program allowing young Indigenous people to learn and engage in leadership in the community.

In addition a number of high school students will undertake registered training in Event Project Management completing 5 event specific units through Goolarri Media's Reality Based Training Program.

DEEWR's Community Festivals for Education Engagement is an exciting opportunity for local youth to connect with role models, achieve success, learn valuable skills and engage with the community whilst having fun.

The Kullarri NAIDOC Festival is proudly supported by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
