2006 saw the formation of the Contemporary Indigenous Music Business Unit between Goolarri, Western Australian Music Industry Association (WAM) and Abmusic. With the support of ArtsWA, this unit is committed to further developing the Contemporary Indigenous Music Sector in WA over the next 2 years and focuses heavily on the skill development of Indigenous musicians and the marketing and distribution of Contemporary Indigenous music to the National and International markets.
In addition to this Unit Goolarri and its WA industry partners WAM and Abmusic, have formed a partnership with APRA, Terrasphere and Songlines on a national level for delivery of the Indigenous Songs Music Bound Strategy. With the support of the Australia Council, this strategy is aimed at supporting Indigenous musicians on a national level in regards to infrastructure, market readiness, branding, production, distribution and rights.
In 2007 and 2008 Goolarri will be working closely with Indigenous musicians to help them in achieving their goals and aspirations whilst working towards recognition of Indigenous musicians and their music in the mainstream music industry.
As part of Goolarri's music strategy we will be holding our first Kimberley Indigenous Music Roundtable Meeting in April giving local Indigenous musicians an opportunity to get together, discuss music and the music industry, share opportunities and network amongst other local Indigenous musicians and industry professionals. In conjunction with this half day meeting we will also be holding 2 days of Music Skills Workshops. This is a great opportunity and we ask anyone interested in participating to contact the music department at Goolarri.
