This year’s Kimberley Girl winner was Emma McNeill from Kununurra; 1st runner-up was Margaret Albert from Broome and 2nd runner-up was Tasha Victor from Beagle Bay. The judges all said it was a difficult choice however ultimately they were all in agreeance that these were the girls that were most deserving. Most Photogenic went to Broome girl Ulanda White and Judges Choice to Sharon Phillips also from Broome.
Kira Fong, Special Project Manager for Kimberley Girl said, ‘I am proud of each and every one of these girls. They have done a fantastic job over the past 4 weeks and they should all be very proud of themselves. I hope they take this experience and promote it as a wonderful personal and community experience for other potential entrants in Kimberley Girl for 2008. This kind of exposure will help promote our Indigenous youth not only on an Australian but also an International scale.’
Thanks to the Western Australian Trade and Investment Office in conjunction with Down Under Answers (a US based travel company), 1st Runner-up Margaret Albert has been selected to travel to Los Angeles in January 2008 to represent the Kimberley and model in the inaugural “Western Australian Style Lounge and Soiree” during the week long “G’Day LA”. 16 year old Margaret is grateful for this fantastic opportunity and looks forward to showing other young Indigenous women that dreams really can come true if you put in the work to make them happen.
All in all, the event was another huge success for Broome’s Indigenous Media Company, Goolarri Media Enterprises with a record crowd at the Kimberley Girl Final of over 600 guests. Kimberley Boy was won by local boy Peter Sebastian and was a definite crowd exciter.
